Mr. David Scott Smith, age 77, of Jonesborough, passed away at the Johnson City Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Elgin, Illinois, on March 5, 1949, to the late Joseph and Gloria Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Joel, Daniel and Bradley Smith.
David was an Electrical Engineer for Texas Instruments and consultant at Borla Exhaust Systems. He was a member for over 40 years of Cherokee United Methodist Church, attended Otterbien United Methodist Church and a faithful member of Jonesborough United Methodist Church. David had a church bell ministry. He enjoyed live music and loved the outdoors and nature. He loved to travel and going motorcycle riding. One thing about David, he never met a stranger and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Renea Smith; daughter, Sara Perry (Steven) of Blountville; son, Joshua Smith (Jennifer) of Jonesborough; sister, Linda Smith (Terry) of Eagle, Idaho; grandchildren, John Scott Smith (Gabi), Hayden Joseph Smith, and Lauren Elise Smith; great-grandson, Sullivan Scott Smith; several nieces and nephews.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 4:00 PM, Sunday, September 27, 2026, at Jonesborough United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Vaughn officiating.

To the entire Smith family, my deepest sympathy at Dave's passing. He was such a dear, sweet, SPECIAL man. We were colleagues at both Texas Instruments and Siemens. In the 80's we shared a 4-man cube in TI's newly formed Automation Department. Actually, Dave had two of the desks; one for himself and one for his equipment. He was working on robotic vision technology. Dave taught me all about pixels in a kind and patient way. His eyes would sparkle and his smile grow wide when teaching and sharing new ideas. For the blessing of working with him, I will always be forever grateful. May there be peace in all of your hearts knowing that now Dave rests in the Hollow of His Hand.

Renea, please accept my sincere condolences and prayers for you and your family in the loss of Dave. He was surely a “man before his time” as a brilliant thinker, innovator and “smart” device designer…he was also a friend to everyone he met. I first met Dave when I was transferred to TI from Houston in 1984 and introduced to him by Richard Keenan as “your go-to guy for everything electronic and he will keep your factory up and running”! No truer words were ever spoken!
I can remember when he installed his first prototype “bell ringer” on Travis’ back porch and how Trish would raise kane when it would loose its timing and dong 12 every hour on the hour before he could get over there and shut it off Lol… AND let us never forget his hilarious story of the first ever surround sound lounge chair that ended up being famous; yet too large to get through the door to it’s final resting place!!!
Ohhh what a fantastic man he was and I know the good Lord has made a seat for him at his table ?? Bless you and your family for he will surely be missed; cherish his memory and any may God speed!!

We worked together while I was at the Johnson City Siemens site. Initially I was the Program Manager for one of our customers and David was responsible for the test engineering of the assemblies we manufactured. His team was key in developing the testing hardware for each assembly. We used to go down to Erwin for lunch when not eating at the company cafeteria. I remember driving back from lunch when the OJ trial verdict was announced. Condolences to the family.

I worked with Dave in the late 70’s at Texas Instruments, he was very smart in electronics, we were working on a project, I made a wooden Chevy bowtie and lined the edge with over a hundred red leds , we never got around to wire it up to put in the back window of my C10 pickup, I still have the wood, I would love to have talked to him

I had the pleasure of working with Dave for many years and he was one of the very best human beings I have ever known. The last time I saw and spoke to him was several years ago when my Mother and I were having breakfast at Clarences in Erwin and he and his lovely wife were also dining there. We talked a bit and he paid for our meal when they checked out. Prayers for comfort for his family. I have no doubt that his soul is in heaven right now!

Dave was a great friend and I enjoyed having him as a neighbor for 46 years. We carpooled our kids to school. Dave came and helped repair our stereo we shared meals and conversation many times. I will miss my friend.
