Mr. Scotty Joe Cooper, age 64, fought a good fight and won the battle on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at the Johnson City Medical Center. He is now rejoicing in the arms of Jesus and is no longer in pain.
He was born on June 3, 1962, in Johnson City, to the late Virgil "Red" and Mary Nell Campbell Cooper. In addition to his parents, Scotty is preceded in death by his brother, Randy Cooper; nephew, Clint Cooper; great nephew, Clay Thomas Collins; father-in-law, Buddy Day; granny, Kate McKinney; and aunt, Elaine Clouse.
Scotty was a man who found joy in the simple things in life; his family, his church family, and his friends. He was a kind and genuine man who never needed much to be happy, and those who knew him will remember his friendly smile, his incredible memory, and the warmth he brought into the lives of others.
For more than 20 years, Scotty was a familiar and friendly face at Mahoney’s Outfitters in Johnson City, where he worked behind the knife counter. To those who came through the doors, Scotty was more than an employee; he was someone who was always ready with a smile, a conversation, and a wealth of knowledge.
Scotty loved his family dearly, but there was a special place in his heart for his daughter, Mackenzee. He was passionate about her and took great pride in being her dad. The love he had for her was evident to everyone who knew him.
He enjoyed NASCAR, a good steak, working in his garden and watching the flowers bloom. He loved sitting down for a game of Rook, watching Andy Griffith and Gunsmoke, and listening to many different genres of music. Scotty was a kind man with a big heart. He loved deeply, remembered much, and was grateful for the people and things that made his life meaningful. His smile, his stories, his incredible memory, and the love he shared with those around him will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 33 years, Ronda Cooper; daughter, Mackenzee Cooper Bray and husband, Garrett; mother-in-law, Linda Day; brothers, Freddie Cooper and Gary Cooper (Martha); sister-in-law, Alisa Payne; brother-in-law, Mike Day (Wanda); special nieces and nephews, Katie Fox (Jordan) and their children, Jake and Lyndee, Mendy Collins (Eric) and their children, Sadee and Sophee, Cody Day (Kendra) and their children, Skyler, Aiden, and Walker, and Dustin Day (Caitlin) and their son, Luke; several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; great friend and co-worker, Larry Shanks; and all his Mahoney’s family.
The family would like to thank Dr. Patel and Abby at the TN Cancer Specialists office for the wonderful care of Scotty.
Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Maple Lawn Cemetery with Pastor Jeremy Dykes and nephew, Cody Day officiating. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:45 PM.
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away” Revelation 21:4

We were fortunate enough to have been a part of the Sliger Drive family neighborhood where Scotty and Ronda lived. It was definitely the kindest and most caring place we could have lived.
We would see Scott pass by everyday with a smile and a wave going either to or coming home from work.
When we moved from the Sliger Drive community Scotty and Ronda let us take their little beagle Cooper who we absolutely adore.
We offer our sincere condolences to Ronda and her family.
Scotty will surely be missed in and throughout the community.

Scott was a fine man to say the least. His daughter and mine were close to the same age and we always talked about our girls. Our hearts are broken but we know this is temporary. Scott preached his own funeral with the way he lived his life. Prayers for you guys. We’ll see him soon

Worked beside Scotty for a number of years, knew him personally for many more. Words can't describe what a fine man and wonderful human being he truly was. And if there was one thing I learned about him during our time together, it was that his love for his wife and daughter knew no bounds. He'll be missed, in life, and nowhere more than behind the knife counter at Mahoney's. RIP old friend.
