Mary Anne White

07/23/2026

Mrs. Mary Anne White, age 86, passed away on July 23, 2026, at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born on February 23, 1940, to the late Chester Buchanan and Elizabeth Evans Stamey, in Burnsville, North Carolina.

She lived a life defined by compassion, service, and an unwavering love for her family, and her students. Throughout every season of her life, she poured herself into caring for others, leaving a legacy of kindness that will continue to inspire all who knew her.

A lifelong learner, Mary Anne attended Appalachian State University and East Tennessee State University, preparing for a calling that would become her life's work. She devoted more than forty years to education, including over twenty years serving the Washington County School System. She found great joy in teaching and took a genuine interest in the lives of her students. She cherished the relationships she built throughout her career and never tired of sharing stories and treasured memories of the young lives she helped shape.

Following her retirement from the classroom, Mary Anne continued serving her community by working at the Church Hill library where she faithfully served on the Board.

Above all, Mary Anne's greatest joy was her family. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she gladly retired so she could spend precious time helping care for them. She treasured every moment they shared together, creating memories that will forever remain in their hearts.

Mary Anne embraced life's simple pleasures. She loved relaxing at the beach, tending to her beautiful flowers and garden, and spending quiet hours with a good book. She also treasured the fellowship of friends, enjoying regular gatherings with her fellow retirees and former coworkers. She was an active member of the Soil Conservation group and was a former member of the Red Hat Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Keith Stamey and Terry Kanackle; and many dear friends.

Survivors include her loving husband of 64 years, Jim White; children, Joe White (Dawn), David White (Pam); grandchildren, Ethan White, Carmela White (Ryan Turnbull), Evan White (Jess Nagie), Seth White, and Carson White; great-grandchild, Teddy White; brother, Chet Buchanan (Tonya); sister, Marlene Bailey; sister, Shirley Whitmire; a very special cousin who was like a sister, Nancy Silvers; several extended friends and family.

A Celebration of Life will be at 5:00 PM, Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Pastor Mitch Russell officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, prior to the service.

Mrs. White will be laid to rest privately in Burnsville, North Carolina.
