Paul W. Horton

10/05/2026

Mr. Paul W. Horton, age 88, passed away on Monday, October 5, 2026, at his home in Fairview, Virginia.

He was born on March 6, 1938, to the late Clyde and Gladys Jennings Horton. In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Alice Peters Horton; sister, Shirley Salling; brothers-in-law, Dan Gilbert and Wayne Salling.

Paul loved the Lord and was saved at New Melody Church at an early age; he was also a faithful member of Zion Baptist Church. A graduate of Fairview High School, Paul went on to attend Virginia Tech before beginning a career with Eastman Chemical Company, where he retired as a crane operator. While Paul accomplished much throughout his life, nothing meant more to him than his family. He was a hardworking farmer who took great pride in providing for those he loved. Every year, he planted a huge garden, making sure to grow all the things his children and grandchildren loved. For Paul, the garden was more than just a place to grow vegetables, it was another way he showed his family how much he loved them. Together with Alice, Paul built a home filled with love, laughter, encouragement, and unwavering support. He was also a proud member of the McPherson Lodge #99 for 53 years, an organization that reflected his commitment to fellowship, service, and brotherhood.

Survivors are his children, Kimberly Wallen (Jeff), Myra Judd (Marty), and Allyn Horton (Kristi); grandchildren, Ashley Howard (Josh), Sara Mowell (Josh), Dalton Horton, Amanda Carlson (James), Emily Isbel (Jeramy), and Cory Judd (Samantha); great-grandchildren, Jacob Weston Howard, Everly Alice Mowell, Nora Celeste Horton, Andrew Bennett Carlson, Ally Clare Carlson, Mason Clyde David Mowell, and Collin Brooks Isbel; sisters, Helen Gilbert and Jerrilyne Horton; nephew, John Gilbert (Brenda and their children, Jocelyn, Derek and Leila); nieces, Lisa Salling and Martha Kelley (Dave and their son, Nate); special extended family, Fresca, Roel and family.

Funeral Services will be at 7:00 PM, Thursday, October 8, 2026, at First Baptist Church Gate City (307 E Jackson Street, Gate City, VA, 24251), with Pastor David Luster officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, prior to the service.

Graveside Services will be at 11:00 AM, on Friday, October 9, 2026, at Horton Roller Cemetery (10747 Fairview Road, Blackwater, VA, 24221) with Pastor George Flanary officiating.

Pallbearers will be Dalton Horton, Cory Judd, Joshua Howard, Joshua Mowell, Jacob Howard, James Carlson, Jeramy Isbel, John Gilbert, and Derek Gilbert.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Marty Judd, Chester Wheeler, George Flanary, Fred Shreiber, Greg Arnold, Larry France, Tom Stewart, Junior Wells, and Jackie Moore.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Mountain Region Home Health, Dr. John Kliesch, and the staff and nurses of Indian Path Medical Center and Caris Hospice.
