Nancy Ann Sherfey Hill, 82, Jonesborough, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023, at Johnson City Medical Center surrounded by family.

A native of Washington County, Nancy was the daughter of the late Hal W. and Dorothy Hyder Sherfey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Audrey Hill Sinisi.

Nancy graduated in 1959 from Sulphur Springs High School. She was an alumna of East Tennessee State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 1962 and a master’s degree in English in 1992. One of the major highlights of her life was a study trip to Scotland as part of her graduate studies.

Nancy retired as an English teacher with the Washington County Schools. She began her career at Sulphur Springs and Boones Creek high schools. After raising her family, she taught at Daniel Boone and David Crockett high schools, as well as Gray Elementary School and Asbury Optional High School.

Nancy was a lifelong member of Sulphur Springs Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and treasurer.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 60 years, Lynwood H. Hill; daughters Jennifer Hill and Pamela Hill McCoy (Brad); and grandchildren Matthew McCoy and Marley McCoy.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, Aug. 20, at 2 p.m. at Sulphur Springs Methodist Church, followed by a graveside service at Sulphur Springs Cemetery with Shelia Minier officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sulphur Springs Methodist Church, 1432 Gray-Sulphur Springs Road, Jonesborough, 37659.

Pallbearers will be Brad McCoy, Matthew McCoy, Ben Carder, Dailey Carder, Johnny Squibb and Zane Painter.

Lynwood and girls so sorry to hear about Nancy. You have good memories of Nancy and I am sure she is resting with Audrey. I remember driving Nancy and the other girls to band practice.
