Archie James Jones

06/22/2023

Mr. Archie James Jones, age 88, Limestone, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 22, 2023.

Mr. Jones was born March 17, 1935, in Yancey County, North Carolina, to the late Columbus & Elizabeth Bennett Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 70 years, B. Jewell Estepp Jones, an infant child, sister, Mae Byrd of Johnson City and a young brother Hubert Jones of North Carolina.

Having accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior, he was faithful to Limestone Free Will Baptist Church. He attended services in the church parking lot to listen in his truck during the Covid-19 pandemic and attended services as long as his health permitted. He was also known among family and friends as a faithful visitor to those who needed visits or phone calls.

Archie lived most of his life in Johnson City and Limestone. Twice retired, Archie went to work at a young age at Royal Oil Company, Johnson City and later was employed by Stafford Custom Graphics, Jonesborough. Providing for his family was always important to Archie and he was honored by his employers for his loyalty and faithfulness.

Among his camping family, Archie was known as the campfire builder and the bicycle man, earning a shirt for proclaiming the latter. He was also known for keeping a manicured lawn and a few days before his death was tending his roses. Tending his apple trees and sharing the fruits of his labor in his garden were his pleasures.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie & Dwight Mitchell, Limestone; and a grand dog, “Casey”; sisters, Lucues Copeland Brunswick, Georgia and Madlyn Lewis, Johnson City; brother, Hobert Jones, Johnson City; and several nephews and nieces.

The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Ken Nickle, his sitters, Teresa, Nancy, Ellen, Kathy and Vickie, the calls, visits and food given by the Limestone United Methodist Church, Limestone Free Will Baptist Church members, Nephew David Rowe and our camping buddy, Ron Garland would brighten Archie’s day with daily phone calls, and a special friend, who he loved as a brother, Elvis Sullivan, our neighborhood families and many special friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 PM, Sunday, June 25, 2023, at Limestone Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor David Reece and Pastor Tim Broyles officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM Sunday, prior to the service.

Archie was such a huge part of my life from the day I was born. I remember our camping trips when I was growing up to the overnight stays with him and mamaw Jewell. They were in ever since of the word like grandparents to me. I’ll always cherish my memories of both of them. I hate work obligations and distance keep me away from being there, but know I love you Papaw Archie. I will see you again. Love you Momma Joy and Uncle Dite. Your baby girl

Debbie - Dad and I are so sorry to hear of Archie's passing. He has been getting daily updates from Faye so we've stayed aware of his medical condition. Bless you honey as both you and I have struggled with the loss of our mothers and now your Dad. I cherish every minute I have with Daddy living with Mike and I - we just never know. May God grant you peace during this difficult time and in the days, months, and years to follow. Cherish the good memories and think of the wonderful reunion between he and Jewel when those gates opened! Much love, Bill and Sharon,, Hickory, NC

I loved Pop so much and have such fond memories of being with him and Mama Jewel every time I could stop by their house during my missionary travels. They always made me Chicolate Banana pudding. And Archie had a red bicycle for me to take home to Texas. Our loss is great and he is surely missed.
