Paul Einar Johnson, 88, Jonesborough TN, passed away peacefully on June 8th after a brief illness with family at his side.
Paul was born in Silverhill, Alabama. Paul served nearly 2 years in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman Third Class and was honorably discharged on April 10, 1948. Paul followed in his father’s footsteps and attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree and later was accepted to the University of Minnesota Medical School. Paul graduated with the Degree of Doctor of Medicine on June 11, 1955.
Paul interned at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth Minnesota and completed his internship on June 30, 1956. Paul worked as a General Practitioner at The Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis Minnesota for 10 years until beginning his Radiology Residency there in 1965. Paul received his Radiology Certification in 1969.
Paul was a partner at Metropolitan Radiological Consultants in Minneapolis, MN which provided radiology services to various hospitals in the area until he and his wife Lois relocated to her home state of North Carolina. Paul was associated with Hospice of Union County, NC for 20 years until his retirement in 2014.
Paul was a well-respected, kind and caring physician. Over the years, many turned to him for medical advice or guidance and it was often commented that his patients loved him and appreciated his compassionate nature.
Paul was an active member of Central United Methodist Church of Monroe and lent his voice in harmony to the Choir for many years. Paul was instrumental establishing funding as treasurer for construction of the Monroe Library and was justly proud of this accomplishment. Paul loved sports and was an avid Golden Gopher, Twins and Vikings fan. He briefly served a Physician Consultant for the Minnesota Twins.
Paul is survived by sons Daniel and wife Linda of Merrimack, NH; Steven of Jonesborough, TN; Timothy of Monroe, NC; daughter-in-law Beckie Etukeok-Johnson and granddaughter Shoshanna of Anchorage, AK; grandson Erik of Fairbanks, AK; granddaughter Toni Sharpe of Columbus, GA; sisters-in-law Jo Ann Rowell of Monroe, NC; Jean Carnes of Clinton, MA and Shawn Provost of Monroe, NC; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Lois to whom he was lovingly devoted for 62 years; his son Mark and granddaughter Elizabeth; parents Oscar and Hannah; siblings Reuben, Lois, Vodie, Eunice and David as well as numerous beloved family and friends.
Paul will be missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at Central United Methodist Church in Monroe, NC on Tuesday, June 13th at 11am. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the church.
