Mr. Hurshel W. Bowers, age 90, Jonesborough, died peaceful Sunday, November 2, 2014 at the Johnson City Medical Center.
Mr. Bowers was born in Wise County, Virginia and son of the late Arthur & Allie Miller Bowers. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bowers was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne K. Bowers, mother of his children, second wife, Wanda B. Bowers, step-mother, Pearl Bowers, sister, Betty Jo Wagner, granddaughter, Ann M. Bowers, and a son-in-law, Jim Blakeney.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Norton Virginia.
Mr. Bowers was a United States WWII Navy Veteran, having served in the South Pacific and South Atlantic. He was an auto parts store manager after the war, a coal mine owner and operator, real estate developer, an artist, and a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Survivors include three children, Gary L. Bowers and wife, Patty, Jonesborough, Cindy Blakeney, of the home and Alan Bowers, Norton, VA; sister, Irene B. Honbarrier, Raleigh, NC; brother and sister-in-law, Ron & Beverly Bowers, St. Pete, FL; and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted 8:00 PM Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Dr. Bruce Montgomery and Minister David Clark officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday prior to the service.
Entombment services will be conducted 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at Washington County Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Roger White, Bud McCreary, Dean Owens, Les Bryant, Al Miller, Don Royston, Lawrence Counts and Charles Steagall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holston Home for Children, Holston Dr. Greeneville, TN 37743.
